Onboarding the New Way
Looking for ways to bring new hires up to speed? Want to make those critical first days more engaging and valued? Look no further than your company’s Onboarding process.
Onboarding is defined by SHRM as: ”…the process by which new hires get adjusted to the social and performance aspects of their jobs quickly and smoothly, and learn the attitudes, knowledge, skills and behaviors required to function effectively within the organization.” Academics call it organizational socialization. Whatever it’s called, if turnover and new hiring is common in your organization, having a well-organized and meaningful experience is extremely important to your new employee’s attitude and engagement in the company. Nationally, 25% of the U.S. population change jobs each year.
Many employers are now becoming aware of the value in having a web-based onboarding portal. Not only does this standardize the material covered and eliminate paperwork, it can be viewed by the new employee prior to them arriving on the doorstep. It can help to get them acclimated before they start and allow them to complete required forms and elections ahead of time, not having their first day or two hijacked and consumed with unexciting but required paperwork. This then has a double benefit – the employee is better prepared Day 1 and can spend most of his/her focus on the people they will work with and their actual job duties.
As SHRM research shows, best practices in Onboarding are: 1) Get the basics out of the way prior to the first day on the job, 2) Make the first day on the job special, and 3) Ensure consistent, repeatable onboarding practices. These all result in a faster learning curve and employees becoming more productive and engaged earlier. With the well-designed use of an onboarding web portal, all these objectives can be accomplished.
